Dissolve sugar in the warm milk, add the eggs, and continue to beat. Add vanilla, cinnamon, and rum. Mix well. Soak bread slices in mixture, coating each side thoroughly. Melt a little butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Carefully remove bread slices from bowl and place on skillet. Cook on each side until golden brown.
