The Copper River Salmon Season Begins!

Hundreds of skilled fishermen flood the little Alaskan town of Cordova every year.

Seafood fans have made the arrival of Copper River Salmon from mid-May to mid-June an annual cause for celebration. In the Pacific Northwest, folks in cities such as Seattle and Tacoma host Copper River Salmon parades and parties to celebrate the four-week window on tasting the delicious fish.

What’s all the hubbub? Cut a bite of this rich salmon, with its nutty flavor and firm flesh, and you’ll most likely join the frenzy.

Because the salmon’s journey up the Copper River is approximately 300 miles, and the rushing waters are so chilly, the fish must store extra oils and fat to survive the trip. (It’s considered by many fishermen to be the toughest of any salmon run.) This increased fat and oil content enrich the flavor of the salmon and add to its health benefits, too. Loaded with those beneficial Omega-3 oils, Copper River Salmon is even recommended by the American Heart Association.

Serve it up at a Memorial Day grill feast or pan-sear or roast it for dinner with light summer vegetables such as sweet yellow corn for a fresh, healthy meal.
