Très Bien - Champagne Baron-Fuenté

At just 45 years old this Champagne house is one of the youngest in the Champagne region, but there is definitely history. Champagne Baron-Fuenté started on a single hectare of the Baron family vineyard where the family has been growing grapes since the 17th century.

In 1961, at the occasion of his marriage to Dolorès Fuenté, Gabriel Baron was given the one hectare of the family vineyard by his father. The vineyard is located in Charly sur Marne, in the western portion of Champagne, and is particularly known for the production of Pinot Meunier grapes. Then in 1967, as a symbol of their union, Gabriel Baron and Dolorès Fuenté founded the house Baron-Fuenté.

The couple, along with their two children, Ignace and Sophie, operate the business today which includes the winery and now 38 hectares, the equivilent of 94 acres, of vineyards.  Although their vineyards are located in a region known for Pinot Meunier production Baron Fuenté also utilizes Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes when developing their blends.

Grande Réserve Brut - $29.95

91 Points - Wine Spectator

Made from 60% Pinot Meunier, 30% Chardonnay, and 10% Pinot Noir this Champagne is a pale yellow color and fruity on the nose.  The mouth feel is elegant and balanced with apple, pear and stone fruits that lead to a crisp and pleasant finish laced with biscuit and almond notes.  Ideal as an aperitif or just to sip on as a cocktail wine.

Rosé Dolorès - $34.95

Made from 60% Chardonnay, 20% Pinot Meunier, and 20% Pinot Noir this Champagne reflects the color of a pale rose petal with rich fruity aromas.  The mouth feel is full with red and black berries dominating the flavors interlaced with a slight brioche character on the mid palate with a long full finish.  The creamy nature and fruitiness of this wine makes is a great paring for fruit based desserts.

Comparing these Champagnes to other houses it is easy to see the value and quality of their wines.  It is exceedingly rare to see a Champagne house that owns as much of the vineyards they produce from as you find with Baron-Fuenté and it is in the control they have over the grape growing process that allows them to accomplish consistent quality year in and year out.  These wines are sure to impress with out breaking the bank.
